Dr. Juan Carlos T. Gonzalez, Professor at the Institute of Biological Sciences (IBS) and Curator of the UPLB Museum of Natural History’s Zoological and Wildlife Collection, has been appointed as the new director of the MNH effective February 16, 2015.

UPLB Chancellor Fernando C. Sanchez, Jr. appointed Gonzalez after receiving the report of the search committee headed by Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor for Research and Extension Dr. Susan May F. Calumpang.

Dr. Gonzalez finished his BS and MS degrees in Zoology from UPLB and DPhil in Zoology at Edward Grey Institute for Field Ornithology and St. Anne's College, University of Oxford. He has served as the Deputy Director of the Institute of Biological Sciences and was recently conferred as UP Scientist II.

Dr. Gonzalez assumed leadership of the Museum in simple ceremonies well-attended by the Museum’s past directors, curators, research and extension and administrative staff on February 25.

“As the new Director, I hope to strengthen the Museum so that it will better serve not just the University but the public as well through biodiversity research,” he said during the program.

Outgoing Museum director Dr. Ireneo L. Lit, Jr. expressed his full support to Dr. Gonzalez.

“I am very glad that Dr. Gonzalez will be at the Museum’s helm and I look forward to greater opportunities that he will open for the Museum,” he said.
