The UPLB Museum of Natural History is getting ready to extend its help to the Los Banos Science Community (LBSC) as the science group goes all out to pioneer and promote the niche concept of science tourism.

Michelle D. Alejado, the museum's coordinator for linkages attended the first meeting of the LBSCFI Tourism Committee last 20 February 2018 held at the DOST-CALABARZON headquarters along with other representatives of LBSCFI member-agencies. Present during the committee meeting were representatives of member agencies such as UPLB, UPOU, LSPU–Los Baños Campus, DENR-ERDB, PCC-UPLB, DOST-PCAARRD, LGU-Los Banos, DOST-CALABARZON and IRRI.

The Science Tourism project currently being spearheaded by the LBSC Foundation, Inc. aims to promote science and technology, increase the number of tourists in Los Baños, and boost the engagements of local stakeholders and enterprises.

Los Baños was designated as the “Special Science and Nature City” of the Philippines through Proclamation No. 349. Visitors flock to this university town to see scientific outputs of LBSCFI member-agencies aside from its natural wonders and other tourist attractions such as the UPLB Museum of Natural History, Makiling Botanic Gardens and Mount Makiling Forest Reserve.

During the meeting, the committee tackled concerns such as the institutional arrangements with DepEd Region IV-A and its supervised public schools as well private schools. The committee also planned for some activities in 2018, and agreed to enhance the tourism packages of member-agencies and craft and submit proposals for capability building for possible funding by the Department of Tourism.

The committee also saw the importance of intensifying the reporting of tourist arrivals at different tourist destinations in Los Baños. According to committee member and town tourism officer Mr. Rommel Maningas, Los Baños currently ranks fourth in Laguna in terms of number of arrivals.

To help the committee enhance the science tourism packaging of the town, the Museum and other institutions will submit their respective situational analyses for baselining information.
