Dr. Lourdes B. Cardenas is MNH's curator for medicinal plants. Her fields of specialization includes biotechnology of plant natural products, pharmaceutical biology, ethnobotany and identification of medicinal plants, in vitro micropropagation and transformation. Her current research involves the establishment of medicinal plants garden under the Philippine Biorepository Network.

Dr. Cardenas holds the rank of Professor 9 at Plant Biology Division, Institute of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, UPLB. She received her Dr. rer. nat. cum laude (Plant Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Biology), from Heinrich-Heine-Universitaet Duesseldorf, Federal Republic of Germany in 1993. On the other hand, she received her MS Botany (1981) and BS Agriculture, cum laude, (1978) from UPLB.

Ma'm Lu became the convenor of UPLB's Inter-disciplinary Studies Center on Natural Products RDE, a member of the Execom of the Health Research and Development Consortium Region IV-A under the DOST-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development. She became President of the Natural Products Society of the Philippines from 2010-2013 and served the Museum of Natural History as Director from 2001–2006.
