Dr. Edwino S. Fernando is MNH's curator for Palms and other Forest Plants. Fernando is currently Professor Emeritus at the Department of Forest Biological Sciences, College of Forestry and Natural Resources,University of the Philippines Los Baños. Edwino is a forest botanist and plant taxonomist and specialized in the following areas: Biodiversity & Protected Areas, Biodiversity Conservation Policy and Planning, and Conservation Biology and Plant Genetic Resources.

He earned his PhD Botany (1994) from the University of New South Wales (Australia), MSc Plant Taxonomy (1981) from the University of Reading (England), MSc Forestry (major in Forest Botany) (1980) and BS Forestry (major in Forest Biological Sciences) (1975) from the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

Edwino has conducted extensive field work and taxonomic research on Philippine plants, including Arecaceae (at least 15 species have been discovered and described as new to science), and molecular phylogenetics of Simaroubaceae and allied families in Sapindales. He was a Visiting Research Fellow in the following institutions: Kyushu University, Japan (1984), Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England (1986), and Molecular Systematics Laboratory, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia (1996).

Dr. Fernando is currently undertaking taxonomic research on the genus Calamus section Podocephalus (Arecaceae) and the ecology and conservation of metallophytes in forests on ultramafic rocks and serpentine soils with keen interest in plant conservation and forest restoration using native species.

Dr. Fernando has authored and co-authored nearly 100 scientific and technical papers and books mainly in the fields of plant biodiversity and plant taxonomy since 1976, published mostly in international scientific journals, some of which are listed below.
