Dr. Pampolina is MNH's curator for forest fungi and endomycorrhiza. Pampolina is presently a Professor 12 at the Department of Forest Biological Sciences, College of Forestry and Natural Resources, University of the Philippines Los Baños. Nelson obtained his PhD in Environmental Biology (2002) from Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia. He finished his MS Forestry (1996) and BS Forestry (1985) degrees at UPLB.

He teaches courses such as Forest Botany, Taxonomy of Forest Seed Plants, Plant Physiology, Fundamentals of Forest Ecology, Introduction to Protected Area Management, Forest Ecology, Forest Mycology, Forest Microbiology and others.

Sir Nelson has served as consultant on various forestry-based projects and as terrestrial ecologist for Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Monitoring of various organizations.
