Ayessa Mechie Angeles
Interns

Ayessa Mechie DC. Angeles is a BS Biology Major in Microbiology student from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) under the supervision of her adviser, Prof. Kristel Mae P. Oliveros.

She is also a Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute scholar. Along with other five microbiology majors from UPLB, she took her internship at the Museum of Natural History (MNH) under the NICER CAVES Program from July 8-August 4, 2022, as a requirement of her course BIO 198.

Ayessa has always been interested in the field of microbiology that was why she was looking forward in doing actual research laboratory work. The internship in MNH has been a great opportunity for her not just in terms of learning, but also for gaining experience that she will bring with her. She was able to perform the laboratory techniques that she had learned in the past two years of remote learning set-up and has learned new things every day that has been spent in the laboratory. Ayessa was also able to meet people who helped her be more certain and motivated about the path that she will be taking after graduation and people who share the same interest and passion on the field of research and microbiology.

Overall, the internship helped her gain and learn things that she will not be able to completely grasp inside the four walls of a lecture hall. It gave her the understanding and knowledge on how important and valuable research is for the benefit of the community and the people. The Museum gave her and her co-interns an opportunity that they will never forget and will always look back to as they continue their studies and take on the path that they will decide for themselves.

Ayessa is also a proud resident member of the UP Cell Biological Society.
