Interns

Mike Loiyd Cape, an undergraduate student at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, without any hesitation chose the UPLB Museum of Natural History as the institution to render his 250 hours of laboratory apprenticeship. His unwavering decision was rooted in the museum’s illustrious reputation for excellence in animal science, diversity, and pioneering research. The internship program at the museum was first introduced to him by his senior, who was also a former museum’s intern. This ignited his enthusiasm to seize the opportunity when it presented itself. Dealing with the thousands of preserved animal collections, guided by the country’s esteemed biologists, and working while being one with nature took his great excitement to be an intern in the museum.

His journey in the museum immersed him in out-of-his-world experiences, from encountering wild bats, frogs, and other animals on Mt. Makiling to dealing with the diverse collections of mammals, birds, and other vertebrates. Amidst these enriching experiences, he found himself the happiest in the Entomological Museum as he discovered a fascinating array of insects and spiders while also benefiting from the wisdom of seasoned professionals.

Beyond academics, his fascination with the natural world has been a lifelong pursuit, fostered by an early love for animal and dinosaur documentaries, which even led to his fondness for Pokemon. During his leisure hours, he passionately expresses his creative side through art activities such as drawing, painting, and calligraphy. Simultaneously, he indulges his cultural interests by immersing himself in anime, dramas, movies, and the vibrant world of K-pop music. Furthermore, his competitive spirit finds an outlet in gaming, notably through Pokemon Unite.

Finally, he aspires to contribute to the field of wildlife biology and hopes to be a veterinarian to aid in the conservation of wildlife.
